WHAT IS FLIP?
Previously known as Flipgrid, Flip is a video conversation tool that allows students to record themselves up to 10 minutes* on anything from course introductions to presentations to teaching demonstrations. It was developed at the University of Minnesota and purchased by Microsoft on June 28th, 2018.
*Recording time is set by the faculty member. Flip provides up to 10 minutes.
WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
Flip normally appears in Canvas as a graded assignment set up by your instructor. Simply access the assignment as you would any other and locate the embedded Flip window (Image 1).
Note: There is a window within a window, so there are technically two scroll bars on the page. This can be a little confusing at first. A typical Flip assignment placeholder will look something like Image 1. Across the top is the Smubbles (Flips mascot) followed by Flip. A list that outlines the process of accessing your current course data is listed, this is known as a breadcrumb. This is helpful because it shows the process it takes to navigate flip to get to your desired assignment.
To the right of the breadcrumbs are Immersive Reader, Share, and Report icons.

Your camera and microphone will open momentarily and allow you to begin recording. You have four options in the upper left corner: cancel, erase, undo, and redo. In the up-right corner are stickies like post-it notes, allowing the student to read from a transcript or notes while recording. The Stickie is not recorded in the video. Across the bottom of the screen, you have four items' options, record button, effects, and backdrops. The Options provides video size, audio, and video import options if you prefer not to record using their tool. Flip accepts formats from Chatterpix, Screencastify, Adobe Spark, or any other video device. The record button (circle) is your main control of starting and pausing your recording session. The Effects (magic wand icon) has a variety of options from filter, text, pen, board, stickers, GIF, photo, and frame to bring character to your video. The Backdrop (person in a box icon) gives the user a chance to change their background in their video from uploaded photo, screen share, blurred out, pre-installed videos or pre-installed photos from Flip (Image 4).

Import Video: To import a prerecorded video you will need to click on options. A new tool bar will appear, once it does you will then click upload clip (Icon has an arrow pointing up of a line) where the upload video tab will appear (Image 5).

From here you can click on “Upload video” to select the video from your pre saved files or drag a video from files on top of “Upload videos” (Image 6). Your video must be formatted as a .MOV, .MP4 or WEBM video format to be used in this program. Once done you can proceed to step 5.

Once your recording is completed, click the purple Next. You will see options to watch your recording, add music and recoup additional recording time using the Add More button. You can add a title, add an attachment, and even download the video for offline editing using a product like Camtasia. If you were not satisfied, simply delete the video using the cancel (X Icon) and re-record (Image 7).

Click the purple Next. From here you can edit the cover, add captions, include a link, edit display name, and change email (only change these details if instructed) on the assignment grid. You can take as many as you would like. Once you are done adding final changes to your video click the purple Post to topic. (Image 8). Momentarily, your video will appear on a “grid” created by your instructor.

Note: If you are a little camera shy remember you can go to Options during your recording of your video and activate Mic only. This ensures that only your mic is being recorded.
RESPONDING TO ANOTHER STUDENT
To respond to another student’s video, simply open their video, scroll down, and click on the purple Add video comment. Begin recording. You can even reply to another reply. There is no limit on the number of replies for each video.
